A pressure-retaining shroud encapsulating an ESP (sometimes called a POD or a CAN), with a flow intake via a lower tailpipe/stinger to engage in a permanent packer with PBR receptacle. The encapsulation provides a reliable low-cost second barrier to well fluids. The system can also be utilised in a dual ESP system where wireline access below the ESP is not required.
The system retains pressure by means of a sealed shroud around the pump assembly. The power cable enters the sealed shroud by means of an electrical penetrator. An ADV (automatic diverter valve) is often incorporated inside the encapsulation to allow free flowing fluids to bypass the ESP. The bottom tailpipe enters a packer above the perforations to create an annular barrier.
This system is used as a low cost alternative to deploying a retrievable ESP pump packer above the ESP in applications where a second barrier is required between reservoir and annulus (SSSV in tubing string being first barrier).
Allows the ESP to be set in the same place after each workover (because there is no casing damage otherwise caused by retrievable packer slips).
This low-cost completion allows a formation isolation valve to be fitted which is activated by the CAN stinger. The formation isolation valve will shut in the well down-hole during workover, thus avoiding the need to “kill” the well. Lengthy well clean-up post-workover is therefore avoided.
